What’s going on in my life at this time? Tons!

Debate 08

Today is the 3rd and final presidential debate, and it’s taking place at my former college, Hofstra University. The year after I leave and something historically monumental happens. And I still live right near Hofstra, but security is so tight I’m really not allowed anywhere near it. I’m jealous of all my friends involvement in different activities around campus, especially those involved in broadcast. My friend Johnny is co-paneling on the radio station coverage and helping out on Sirius/XM.

Although everyone is all a-buzz, I don’t think this debate is going to be a huge deal. Obama only has to try not to ‘gaffe,’ and McCain really has to step it up, but I think the majority of people are not undecided, and those that are honestly still undecided must have just been too lazy to get into it. Regardless, this is history in the making and it’s pretty important. After the last 8 years…

Edit: So I got in anyway, they allowed Alumni on campus. I have to say Hofstra actually got something right for once. There were concerts and organizations and tents and broadcasts, and just so much stuff going on, it was unreal. I didn’t get to do that much actually, but I did see a concert from the top of the Biotour bus, Melodeego. Guitarist killed it, singer still thought it was the 60s. I believe I was filmed dancing a bit too. Cameras everywhere. Saw a ton of my friends on TV and articles. Crazy. Also, in regards to Blog Action Day which is focusing on Poverty, the main focus of the organizations at our debate was clean energy and clean coal and clean fuel and other sources, etc etc. So kinda funny that I felt I was supposed to think about Poverty but more attention in my day was given to clean energy.

Edit 2: So the debate was a huge success, and I think both candidates spoke more clearly on their plans, and how they view the other person, very well (Obama won though). What I couldn’t believe was how many people were still undecided voters! Post-debate coverage had a ton of interviews with undecideds and they all seemed to say that they finally figured out the candidates plans from this debate. I don’t know…I sorta knew most of what they said from their last debate – both their healthcare and economic plans. Schooling focus was new, and they didn’t talk about foreign policy. Also surprising was how many of those undecideds that said McCain appealed to them more. I find that fascinating.

Blog Action Day

Today is Blog Action Day 2008. The topic this year is Poverty. I know you don’t want more stuff to think about, what with the Economy and the War and the Election, but Poverty is still a pretty big deal. I haven’t prepared any posts on the subject, but I will reblog and link back to their website, and hope you read up on all you can. They are hoping to raise awareness and initiate action to face this global problem. Many sites are featuring tees and other products with the proceeds going to charity, so go find and buy stuff!

Macbook Pros

Yesterday Apply finally released their long-awaited redesigned Macbooks and Pros. I think they’re gorgeous and a real breakthrough with their new unibody aluminum enclosure. I will have to try the new trackpad out to see if I like it. Other problems: Glossy only screen. As a designer (I guess I would say pro?) I have run into the color problems between monitors and printing. It’s super annoying. Most professionals prefer Matte displays, and Apple doesn’t even give the option of having them. I can understand how Glossy seems great with it being brighter, etc etc, but when you put that on a Macbook PRO, used by professionals who need the proper colors, that poses problems… It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out. Also, I don’t think anybody asked them “What happens if the case or glass breaks?”

Regardless, the hardware and setup is sweeet (especially two Nvidia graphics card). I would really like one.

Freelance

My freelance work is taking off. I have several projects underway, and I’m still open for more (because the ones I have don’t eat up too much time). I’m also producing some great mockups and redesigns of sites for practice and additions to my portfolio. I think I’m learning a great deal about usability and functionality associated with websites, and it shows in my work. Maybe I could be a usability manager… Anyway, I still need to finish the header for this blog. I have some ideas for the design, but I need some professional pictures of myself, so waiting on that. In the meantime, once again if you have any work send it this way!

Halloween

I have all the pieces of my Halloween costume! I just need to mess with one of the pieces the way I want it, and put a small amount of makeup on day-of parties. I am semi-excited cause 1 it’s an awesome costume, and 2 I’m usually a big slacker when it comes to Halloween. Now I just need to find some parties…

Winter

It’s getting really cold. I forgot that I hate cold. What was wrong with our ancestors for leaving Africa?! Idiots. I want to move to Cali… so cliché

Cheers,
Matthew Lettini
